Has anyone here tried Simple Living?

March 9th, 2009 at 05:32 am

As defined by Wikipedia.
Simple living (voluntary simplicity) is a lifestyle characterized by minimizing the 'more-is-better' pursuit of wealth and consumption. Adherents may choose simple living for a variety of personal reasons, such as spirituality, health, increase in 'quality time' for family and friends, stress reduction, personal taste or frugality.

I must admit that it sounds very tempting in this hustle and bustle world. But I guess my question is that , Is it practical in todays world. It is similar to the lifestyle that Henry David Thoureau lived in Walden. I also stubled upon a free audio link to Walden if anyone wanted to listen to it

I think many here do to some degree eh? I think I do too. I suppose the part of the problem is defining how far we are willing to go down the Simple Living path. Enough to do what Thoreau did and shut ourselves off from the rest of society, while using the most basic of living amenities?

I live in a bedroom without a bed. Only a mattress on the floor. I use a hand-me-down computer at home. I have house-plants that my workplace wanted to dispose of. On the other hand, I also have an iPod, internet, and a HDTV but no HD cable (yet). What am I? Do I qualify? I don't know....

Yes, I try...but I'm sure I'm far from it in many aspects. Same as BA, with 2 TV's, cell phones, a computer. Two living areas full of furniture. But I really try to limit what we need to live on a daily basis.

I think simple living is defined on an individual basis. For some, it can be embracing a Walden-style existence. For others, simply putting limits on things.

I am trying to simplify and declutter. A lot of what my household has is a result of over-accumulation (too many gifts from grandparents and aunts/uncles, the tendancy to "hoard" because we might need something, taking everything that is offered to us because we are perceived as having too many kids to be able to buy what we need, etc). I am really trying to tackle this and "detatch" from things.

If there was a set of standardized rules to follow for "simple living" I could not do it. There are some things like internet and video games that my hubby and I cannot give up. But we try to live simply. We make a conscious effort.

May I add the oft-quoted Thoreau dined at the Emersons' table many many nights. And any where else where he didn't have to eat barks and leaves.
